Opening a US Bank or Payment Account as a Non-Resident with an EIN

  • 设立文件:州政府批准的 Articles of Organization 或 Certificate of Formation。

  • 有效护照,有时还要第二种身份证件;
  • 居住地址证明,例如近期的水电账单或银行对账单;

  • 公司做什么,卖给谁,客户主要在哪些国家;
  • 网站或其他线上存在,内容是否与描述一致;
  • 预计的月度收付款金额和笔数;
  • 资金来源和主要合作方;

  • 設立文件:州政府批准的 Articles of Organization 或 Certificate of Formation。

  • 有效護照,有時還要第二種身份證件;
  • 居住地址證明,例如近期的水電賬單或銀行對賬單;

  • 公司做什麼,賣給誰,客戶主要在哪些國家;
  • 網站或其他線上存在,內容是否與描述一致;
  • 預計的月度收付款金額和筆數;
  • 資金來源和主要合作方;

For a non-resident opening a bank or payment account for a US company, the EIN is close to essential, but it is a starting point, not an approval. US banks and payment providers have to verify both the company and the people behind it under anti-money-laundering and know-your-customer rules, and each institution adds its own risk policy on top. The practical approach is to prepare one consistent file in advance and to understand that nobody can guarantee a particular institution will open the account.

This is general information, not tax, legal, or financial advice. EIN Apply is a third-party filing help service; it is not a bank and does not represent any financial institution.

About the company, you will commonly be asked for

  • EIN proof. CP 575, or a Letter 147C verification letter from the IRS.
  • Formation documents. The filed Articles of Organization or Certificate of Formation.
  • Operating agreement. Showing the members and ownership percentages; often requested even for a single-member LLC.
  • Good standing. Some institutions want a recent certificate of good standing.
  • Company address. Some institutions do not accept a registered agent address or a purely virtual address as the business address; requirements vary.

About the people, you will commonly be asked for

US financial institutions generally identify the company's beneficial owners, commonly each individual who owns 25% or more directly or indirectly, plus one person with significant control. For those people, expect requests for:

  • a valid passport, sometimes with a second form of ID;
  • proof of residential address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement;
  • date of birth, nationality, role, and ownership percentage.

This is not the same as FinCEN's BOI reporting. Even where BOI rules have changed, banks' own due diligence still applies.

About the business, you will commonly be asked

  • what the company does, who it sells to, and where its customers are;
  • whether a website or other online presence exists and matches that description;
  • expected monthly amounts and numbers of incoming and outgoing payments;
  • the source of funds and main counterparties;
  • whether the business falls into an industry the institution restricts or does not serve.

Answers should be specific, accurate, and consistent with the principal activity on SS-4 and the content of your website. If the business is just starting and has no transaction history yet, describe the plan and expected amounts honestly; do not invent customers, contracts, or volumes, because later reviews will compare against what you said.

Tax forms

Institutions usually ask for a tax status certification, such as a W-9 or one of the W-8 series forms. Which one is correct depends on the company's tax classification and its owners, and foreign-owned single-member LLCs get this wrong often. If you are unsure, have a tax professional confirm it rather than picking whichever form looks simpler.

Banks versus payment platforms

Some traditional banks require an in-person branch visit; others accept remote applications. Fintech platforms are usually fully online, but in many cases the deposits are held by a partner bank. Before signing up, check who actually holds the account, what the terms and fees say, and whom you deal with if something goes wrong. Merchant and card-acceptance accounts add their own review of the website, refund policy, and product compliance.

Common reasons for a decline

  • Inconsistent documents. The name, address, or ownership percentages differ from one document to the next.
  • A vague business description, or a website that is empty or does not match it.
  • Countries, regions, or industries the institution does not serve.
  • Unexplained money flows.

After a decline, work out which part of the file caused it before applying elsewhere. Applying repeatedly with the same problem rarely ends differently.

What not to do

  • Do not use a nominee, or borrow anyone's identity or SSN to open an account.
  • Do not misstate addresses or business activity.
  • Be skeptical of anyone promising a guaranteed account. The decision always rests with the financial institution.

Putting the file together

Before the first application, place the EIN letter, formation documents, operating agreement, passport, address proof, and a one-paragraph business description in one folder, and read them side by side. If a stranger could tell from those papers alone that they describe the same company and the same people, you are ready to apply.

After the account opens

Approval is not the end of the review. Institutions may refresh their records periodically, or ask for an explanation when your transaction pattern changes noticeably, for example a sudden jump in volume or payments from new countries. If owners, addresses, or the business itself change, tell the institution and update the file rather than waiting to be asked. Accounts that sit unused for long periods may also be closed. Keeping the file current is far easier than rebuilding it under a deadline.
